Since 2021, many friends have joined me in informally supporting this village. Recent floods and political discord have only increased the importance of our efforts. In addition to helping with the recent disasters, our support has helped make some very positive changes for the villagers:

  • A few years ago, we provided the funds for a well to be dug. This well allows for the community to access safe and clean water. The well now has a pump and both children and adults can safely retrieve water to carry to their homes.

  • Donated funds have purchased small solar batteries for over 20 homes. The batteries provide electric light and allow for people to charge their cell phones. The solar battery saves money on kerosene, allows evenings to be productive and cell phones can be charged at home without any cost. Before the battery was available, people had to walk into town and pay to have their phones re-charged.

  • Collected funds have supplemented school fees for young children and adults. There is no free public school in Kenya. Families are responsible for tuition, uniforms and supplies. Adult education programs are available for a fee and many of the Shitungu residents take advantage of these opportunities and others aspire to do so.

  • Recently, we have funded the purchase of equipment and supplies to produce and sell hand-made soap, which has generated some much-needed sustainable income.

  • A large package of medical equipment (blood pressure cuffs, thermometers and oximeters) was sent along with first aid and emergency supplies to allow for greater self reliance regarding healthcare and safety. The nearest medical facility is five kilometers away and there is no public transportation directly from the village. Healthcare is expensive and difficult to access.

The establishment of non-profit organization 501(c)(3) status means that all donations to the organization are tax deductible, it is now possible to apply for grants, and other establishments will more likely be willing to donate to this organization.
